This is the best tomato sauce, hands down.  [easyazon-link asin=”0679764372″ locale=”us”]Marcella Hazan[/easyazon-link] made it famous, Orangette and Smitten Kitchen made it popular, but every cook with a kitchen can make it.  Easily.  And cheaply.  And quickly.

28 ounce can whole peeled tomatoes
5 T butter
1 medium onion, peeled and halved
a bit of salt

Pour everything above in a pot.  Arrange the onions cut face down.  Bring to a simmer.  Allow to simmer for about 35-50 minutes, breaking up the tomatoes as they cook down.  Remove the onions, pour sauce over al dente pasta.

I can make a dinner for $2.00 with this recipe, and it is a hit every time.
