M9 :: A Ruthless Purge

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." –William Morris

Charley__Harper__Ford_Times_Jan1955 This picture has nothing to do with the post.  Only I love Charley Harper and I would love to have this printed HUGE somewhere in my house!

I am sure you've heard this quote before.  I know I have.  Yet, my house somehow collects things and those things have little thing babies–and then, before I know it my house is overrun with stuff I didn't intend.

Too many shoes.  Too many tchotchkes.  Too many kitchen items.  Too many decorative items.  Too much fabric.  Too many supplies from too many half hearted/half started crafts.  Too many, too much.

I find I love the things I have more, when I actually have fewer things.  When my life is overrun by things…my eye and heart can't land on the things I love.

This week, I'll be conducting a ruthless purge of my house…with the two criteria William Morris stated above.  Do I believe it to be beautiful or know it to be useful?  If not, out it goes.  I'll be selling the sellable to fund a future adventure and donating the rest to a few pertinent charities.

I have great expectations of this mission–but, I'm nervous.  I'm nervous of turning my house upside down (we ARE having houseguests this weekend!!).  I'm nervous of not being ruthless enough.  But, I think this will create the space my family needs going into the spring, fund some future fun adventures, and hopefully provide other local people with things they might not otherwise have enjoyed.

Join me in this adventure?  If you do, please be sure to send me via email your story and a picture or two!  I'll do a guest post and feature you.

p.s.–I lost my favorite mug.  I'm in mourning and searching for a twin replacement.  Any favorite mug suggestions?  I need something preferable traditional mug shaped (no crazy car/tall shaped mugs…I'm not a corporate warrior!).  I also need something that keeps liquids hot for inordinate amounts of time.  :)  Leave suggestions in the comments if you have a favorite!  Help!  I'm desperate!
