I try to do most things the easy way. I try not to catch the “perfect bug” and focus instead on getting things started and enjoying the process. This ethos informs everything I do, from getting dressed to Christmas shopping to cooking for my family. I pride myself on being as fuss-free as possible, while still achieving fairly respectable results. We can’t throw the baby out with the bath water, am I right?
Before we really get into the wardrobe portion of The No Brainer Wardrobe Revisited, we will do little soul searching and inventory the habits and associations you have with clothes.
Do you love getting dressed? Do you hate it? Or do you simply see it as something that has to get done?
Do you spend too much money and have too little to wear? Or do you find that you toss in trendy, cheap, but ill-fitting clothes at Target when you just went in for a pack of gum?
Is your closet stuffed to overflowing, but you haven’t looked at most of the contents in ages? Do you feel guilty when you look at your clothes?
Can you write down any feelings or thoughts you have about your selection of clothes, your routine in getting dressed, and your shopping habits?
It’s just a good idea to know where you’re likely to need to focus your attention. Do you need to feel better about the clothes you have? Do you need to stop the cycle of impulse buying and then donating? Do you need to beef up some areas of your wardrobe in order to have more options? Do you need to limit your choices so you spend less time and emotional energy on the process?
Take some time to really notice your reaction to the idea of getting dressed in the morning with more confident and more ease. Take a deep breath, jot down some notes.
For me: I’ve had 4 babies in the last 6 years. I haven’t spent a significant amount of money on my wardrobe since then. Not that I haven’t purchased things here and there, but, I haven’t done any crazy shopping in a long while. When I look at my closet, I see a lot of things that aren’t my favorite any more, but also big holes in some categories of clothes. It stresses me out if my few favorites aren’t clean.
