GPS was powered up and ready to take me to my destination–but, my insides were tied in knots! Why do I get so nervous about these sorts of things? Oh, probably because I couldn't get ahold of either the person who invited me to the group or the person who was hosting. So, basically, I was showing up at someone's house who wasn't expecting me–and I wasn't even 100% positive that the group was still meeting. Yes, stomach=knots in that situation. I quite like control, thankyouverymuch.
But, once I arrived, I realized that all would be well and I even recognized the friendly face of a very good friend. If she was there–all would be well. She is the type of person to put anyone at ease. However, also at the table were 2 very well known artists around our area, one of them owning a local gallery. That's okay, at this point, I was there and ready to go. :)
The atmosphere was very casual. Some people were just sketching different things–working on honing their skills. One woman (and this is SO her! I LOVE her!) has been working on the same piece at each meeting for a whole year! It is the most intricate and beautiful watercolor as you can see below.
Most everyone was indeed using their fancy tools and swanky paints. Some had portable easels and large palettes, but some were simply using a sketchpad and pencils. It made me feel slightly more at home with my $.89 craft paint. One thing I especially loved was when one of the very well known local artists told me she painted on of her pieces entirely with craft paint–and "it sold for a whole lot of money". :) I loved that! That moment made me feel immediately comfortable and at home. Thank goodness!
Unlike the fancy setup above–I had the most petite cute little 8×10 canvas. It was perfect for the 2 hour time allotment…and also allowed for plenty of talk breaks and getting engrossed in conversation. You wouldn't believe the conversation at "P"ainting group. :)
And really, because I know you're dying to see…my little piece of art is right below. I can't decide if I want to keep working on it or if I'm finished with it as is. But, it is such a little talisman or a reminder of myself that beautiful things happen when you step out of your comfort zone, show up somewhere unexpected, or just go out on a limb.
So excited with my little piece, but also breathing a sigh of relief that the evening is over! I was definitely putting myself out there especially not knowing exactly what to expect. I like to know things and to be in control. Those two things definitely did NOT happen tonight. But, that's okay. I'm learning.
