M14 :: Fabric Recommendations for Garment Sewing

Sooooo–since I'm SUCH an expert.  I wanted to share with you some ideas about fabric with you today.

A lovely commenter was lamenting about the poor selection of great garment fabric out there–and I have to kind of agree.  The market is expanding, just as it did for quilting fabric over the past few years, but to find a great print…I generally still go to the quilting cotton and cross my fingers that it drapes well.  :)

Anyway, Ashley said this,

Why…Ashley…I DO have a suggestion.  Spoonflower!!  This is kind of like Etsy for fabric designers (or wannabe fabric designers!)…you just upload your print…and BAM!  It's ready and able to be printed in about 6 different fabrics.  Fabulous!  If you're a talented illustrator or designer…this may be such a cool option for you.  But…if you're not.  You're still in luck.  I have included some of my favorites from Spoonflower.  It's you're lucky day.  :)  And please, while you're searching on your own…link up in the comments to any of your favorites (or any YOU designed!!).

A very cool alternative to polka dots!

Okay, now for a few things.

1.  I would pick either…quilting cotton, their bamboo/cotton blend (which is sold out right now), or their cotton lawn.  I think their bamboo/cotton is what I would really choose…but I'm impatient…so I'd probably go with cotton lawn if I were ordering today.  BUT, know that cotton lawn has a tendency to be semi-sheer…so just know that going in…and don't order a white fabric for an unlined skirt.  Just sayin'.

2.  Because of the custom nature, Spoonflower is more expensive than your local fabric store.

3.  Know that all monitors show color differently.  What you see on your screen may not be the exact shade…so wait until you have it in hand to match things to it.

4.  It's addictive.  Have fun.

Alright, that's it for now.  The Twigs want to go for a walk…so walk we will on this Carolina blue sky day.  Praise the LORD for springtime weather.  I was about to go nuts during our extended wintertime.  PLUS, I was so blessed by (and I know others had some real damage…I know it wasn't all good) some thunderstorms 2 nights ago.  I've been homesick for Indiana (and family) recently, so it was a little taste from home.  In Charlotte, we never ever get thunderstorms like I'm used to from the midwest…so I seriously enjoyed the rare occurrence.
