how to get more done

Ever feel like you’re drowning in your to-do list? I do. Sometimes it seems like after I check off one thing, three more are added to the list. In our society being busy is the norm, in fact it’s expected. When asked, “How are you?” most people respond with “Busy, but good.” The sad part is that a lot of times we are busy just for the sake of being busy. We need to let go of that notion. It’s ok to get things done quickly in order to rest. One of my favorite girls Lara Casey (Editor of Southern Weddings) often says, “Done is better than perfect.” I wholeheartedly agree. Here are a few tips for getting more done so you can be less busy.

1. Learn to turn of your mental to-do list

Yes, I know I just said this post was about getting more done, but that to-do list that you never turn off isn’t helping you. Instead of taking up brain energy thinking about all the things you have to do, actually go do it. Try to keep your list on paper instead of in your head. After you’ve done all you can for that day, TURN IT OFF. Let your body rest and you’ll have more get up an go to get things done the next day.

2. Say “no” to what’s not important

I hate telling people “no” but sometimes it must be done. You can’t do everything, no one can. Make a list of all the things you have on your plate, then mark which ones are important and which ones you need to let go. At the end of the day your relationships are the most important thing. Don’t say yes to something at their expense. Trust me, I’ve learned this the hard way.

3. Stay focused for an hour, then take a break

I know this can be a hard one, especially if you have little kiddos running around, but it will work wonders. It’s amazing how much you can get done when you set a time limit for yourself. I know as women we pride ourselves in multitasking, but try focusing on one thing then move on to another.
