Smart Hack: Decorating Your Bedroom on a Budget

Decorating your bedroom on a budget is not about buying a bunch of things that are inexpensive. It’s about slowly starting to buy pieces to fill up your space that you are really in love with. And let’s face it, unless you are winning that powerball billion dollar lottery tonight, your dream home isn’t going to just appear one day. It takes lots of time to build a place full of things you really like and let’s be honest, it’s hard to not get sick of the decorations you put up. So after experiencing some discontent with how my bedroom feels while not being at the point where I can spend big bucks repainting, buying new furniture, and renovating it, I do know that I can start small and begin buying some things that I really like and have more of a timeless feel. So with hopes of revamping my bedroom on a budget while thinking long term about building quality pieces for a home I hope to one day have, here are some quality tips for snazzing up your bedroom

Your bed:

You literally spend SO much time in this thing. Make sure you feel good about how it looks. I’m still in a smaller-sized collegey sized bed so I haven’t splurged for an expensive duvet comforter but I can’t wait for the day I do (I’ve had my eye on this one for like three years). Therefore, I have a white and gray colored comforter set that lets me change the color scheme in my room pretty easily. If you’re one whose feelings change often about how things look, I think you should opt for neutral colors that let you change with ease, too. There are definitely some fun options when it comes to bed spreads and if you find one you love then it might be something you can work around. I like this bright one and the style it brings all by itself. I also think that once you have a bigger sized mattress that you think you will have for a long time, that you should splurge on the bedding that you get into every. single. night.

The walls:

The fun part, right?? So frames are a quick way to change the way your bedroom looks. I used to buy cheap frames that were really plasticy and got scratched up by the time they were on the wall. And when I close my eyes and picture my dream house, there is no cheapy frames hanging on the wall. So instead, I just bought these perfect and white IKEA frames. These can be easily moved into a different room and give the option of a matted 8×10 or an unmatted 11×17. That is a lot of bang for my buck. When you get the itch to restyle again, you can still use these frames or just move them!

Now let’s talk about what you are going to put in the frames. If your a personal picture kind of person, I am LOVING Social Print Studio. They are allllll made in the good ole’ USA and it’s a real people working real hard kind of place. Honestly, I could look endlessly on Etsy at prints to fill my frames. A few of my favorite print shops are thelittlelow, ElizabethMayville, and ohmydeer.

Lighting:

Lighting is ultra important in a room. Gimme all the light, right? Table lamps and standing lamps can bring in some style without taking up too much space. If you are feeling dull about your space, lamps and light can literally just bring the brightness up. One problem with lamps is that they can be unexpectedly expensive. So assess your situation! If space is an issue, go with a standing lamp. It does it’s job, affordable, and can be used elsewhere. If you have a nightstand that could take on a lamp, you may want to think about spending the extra bucks to get one you love, that can move on with you when your bedroom changes. Keep in mind, the things on this list aren’t meant to be all bought together. It’s a one thing at a time kind of deal, in my opinion. Here are three of my favorite table lamps:

  1. Neutral colored that can match with any color scheme
  2. Or this glass, clear, lamp that is affordable and could literally be placed anywhere!
  3. Lighter blue if you really like cool colors

These three things are just ideas to get your creative + interior designer juices flowing. I have come to terms with the fact that saving up for a new lamp is perfectly fine. It’s quite silly to think that you’ll just wake up one day and have a dream space that is pinterest worthy. Instead, we are celebrating that little decisions like picking out frames that enable to get to excited about hanging something great on the wall. Organizing, decorating, and redecorating can seem like a never endless process and we don’t want that. Just because you are really into mint green right now doesn’t mean you should paint your walls that color, buy mint green pillows, find perfectly matching mint green pictures, and top it off with too many mint green color shirts because chances are in three years, you won’t like mint green anymore (not that I am speaking from experience because I would NEVER do that).  It’s all about the process, which is ALWAYS changing, right? And if you’re not into redecorating your bedroom, then maybe you have any itch to clean out the closet?
