bear each other’s burden

Twice during this long Labor Day weekend, I spoke with friends who are bearing an incredible weight of sorrow and responsibility. I could see their weary eyes and sense their fatigue.

And, I’ve been there, too. I’ve known the crushing burden of grief. I’ve felt the constant load of responsibility.

Both of my friends, whose situations are nothing alike and do not know each other at all, spoke of being glad that there is someone to share the hardship. Each woman said that there is a spiritual release that comes, just from knowing someone is praying and sitting in the mess with you.

We can divide each other’s pain and multiply the joy when we share in life together. It is messy, and most of the time uncomfortable, and it’s awkward–oh is it awkward. You might not know what to say, you might say the wrong thing, you might do it wrong. But, just the praying and the being there…there’s something supernatural that happens in that space…something that is totally not dependent on your performance.

So, sit. Go, be. Divide the burden that someone else finds themselves with.
