In just about a month, we'll be embarking on our family vacation with Husband's family. We try to do family portraits while we're there. I pick the clothes for the most part for our little ten person (including Asher this year!!) group…and I set up the shot. Then, we find some willing soul to snap the picture. :) It's about the best way we've figured out to do it. They always end up great and are just so special to look back on as our family grows.
Here are my top tips for picking clothes for a large group portrait:
- Pick 3 colors to work from. Make 2 colors the "main" colors and throw the other in "pops" for variety.
- Mix in some prints and patterns for interest.
- Vary the lengths of pants, skirts, and dresses.
- Make sure members of the same smaller family unit are not wearing the same tone and hue–they will blend together when standing next to each other.
- Take each person's personal style into account. I know my mother-in-law likes more structured shirts, so I try to find something she will feel comfortable in.
- Order several options online and take back what doesn't work. No shame in that. Sometimes you need to see what the color and texture look like in real life.
