When contacted about the painting group I will be going to tomorrow night (insert chills and nerves here), I asked what supplies I needed to bring. She said, "Oh, just a canvas and your paints." So nonchalant…so cool. Canvases, I can do. But, to be honest…Welp, my paints are of the $.89 craft variety and my paintbrushes have primary colored handles.
So, I thought, a trip to the hobby store is in order. And guys, can I be honest here for a minute? A trip to the hobby store can turn into a 4 day expedition for me–requiring rest and hydration and extra food rations. To say I LOVE hobby/craft stores is a gross understatement. Husband shudders every time I mention the word, "Michael's"–because he knows that he'll lose his wife for an extended period of time, there will be slight damage done to the bank account, and then I'll want to dig into my new supplies as.soon.as.I.get.home. ANNNND, I'll want uninterrupted time to play with said supplies for a good deal of time after that. Hey, he knew this going into this whole marriage thing. :) It wasn't a deal breaker then, it should be fair game now.
Anyway, back on track, I headed out to our local hobby/craft store Michael's not wanting to spend an exorbitant amount of money. This was, after all, for a hobby which I don't possess talent…yet. :) So, I decided to get just the basics–and show up like a fool with my craft paint and kid's paint brushes. Hey, I figure they'll either be cool with my low-brow supplies, or they'll pity me and let me use their magical and amazing high-end paints and brushes. Either way, I'm cool with that.
So. I picked up some white gesso to prep the canvas (plus, I've been wanting to art journal for awhile–and this seems to be an important supply for that hobby, too). I also got some gel medium, because I eventually want to try some image transfers–although, when I looked up the supplies for that technique…oh dear heavens…I am NOT made of money. I, of course, purchased a canvas…which was 50% off, thankyouverymuch. I went with an 8×10 size, smaller than I would normally get…but I thought petite was good since I have to take it with me!
Also, and you are going to die when I tell you this…those
aforementioned $.89 craft paints were ON SALE 3/$1.00…sooooo, I picked up
9 new colors of those! So, I loaded up on more low-brow painting
supplies…fabulous. My Capital P Painter friends would be so proud (maybe not).
Guys, I'm so nervous about tomorrow. What if they are amazing and I look so silly? Oh well, I guess that's what this whole "going out on a limb" thing is all about. WISH ME LUCK.
