I am a hoarder. I am an information, digital hoarder. I am known to have 40+ tabs open at once. Once my interest is piqued, I need to know I can access information in case I want to later.
It takes a deep breath at the end of the week for me to close out my collection of tabs. It feels like a tiny loss when I do it, giving up on knowing something that was possible to know.
It is good to have information. It is good to hold on to important things. It is also good to recognize what is and what is not important.
I am going through a season of pruning right now. The ability to discern the necessary from the good is imperative as I look at slimming down parts of my life. Good is great, when you have room for it. But, sometimes it’s time to strip down to the necessities and get rid of the good and beautiful fluff.
For me, loose ends and open doors are irritating to my soul in a really profound way. I feel discontent and vulnerable when I have too many things going and too many things I’m taking care of. Those open tabs and unfinished projects are like tiny open doors–and I wonder what I’m missing out on.
So, right now I’m weighing just how much information I need to allow to flow through my online life. Not because it’s bad, or that other people wouldn’t be able to tolerate taking in such a large amount of stimulus. But for me, knowing myself, I need to forgo a lot of the good in this season because I just can’t keep up. And giving up that bit of good frees my mind and heart up to really, really process the good I do take in.
